The Syntax of Appositive Relativization
نویسنده
چکیده
Appositive relative clauses differ in some essential respects from restrictives. I argue that appositive relatives and appositions can be put together as a third class of coordination denoting specification. Thus, an appositive is a specifying conjunct to the visible antecedent. It is a semi-free relative with a pronominal head that is normally empty. Therefore, its internal syntax is equivalent to that of restrictive relatives; hence there is one syntax for both types of relative clauses. In essence it is the context of specifying coordination that accounts for the different behavior of appositives. In the light of this analysis, the properties of appositive relatives (as opposed to restrictives) are systematically reviewed.

Appositive Relative Clauses
The difference between restrictive and appositive relativization is usually represented in syntax as complementation versus adjunction with respect to the antecedent noun. Instead I propose that an appositive relative clause (ARC) is coordinated with its antecedent. This approach avoids problems that come with the adjunction analysis, and it predicts some interesting facts. First consider the s...
متن کاملRelativization in Sasak and Sumbawa, Eastern Indonesia
On the basis of a detailed study of the relativization phenomena in the dialects of Sasak and Sumbawa in eastern Indonesia, this paper shows that the two crucial assumptions made by Keenan & Comrie on Western Malayo-Polynesian languages are untenable. That is, the Topic in these languages cannot be reinterpreted as Subject and that Austronesian non-Actor focus constructions cannot be considered...
متن کاملHeaded relative clauses in generative syntax – Part I
A headed relative clause is a syntactically complex modifier involving abstraction over an internal position of the clause (the relativization site) and connected to some constituent it modifies (the relative ''head''). In the standard approach, abstraction is syntactically implemented by means of an unbounded dependency between the relativization site and a relative operator taking scope over ...
متن کاملArabic Relativization Patterns: A Unified HPSG Analysis
Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic have several relativization patterns, including relative clauses with and without relativizers and adjectival modification patterns. Previous generative work has targeted several phenomena, but there is no analysis which covers all relativization patterns in any generative framework. We present an HPSG analysis that covers these phenomena in a uniform...
متن کاملNon-Restrictive Relative Clauses in Construction Based HPSG
This paper presents an account of English non-restrictive (‘appositive’) relative clauses (NRCs) in the framework of ‘construction based’ HPSG. Specifically, it shows how the account of restrictive relative clause constructions presented in Sag (1997) can be extended to provide an account of the syntax and semantics of NRCs and of the main differences between NRCs and restrictive relatives. The...
